Financial Aid Tips

All Applicants

Financial Aid Seminars are offered on campus.  We strongly suggest you attend.  A schedule of seminars is available at the Financial Aid Office.

Read the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) instruction booklet.  It will make the application easier to complete and assure that you provide accurate information. Incorrect or incomplete information will  delay processing of your application.

Complete the application with black or dark ink or a #2 pencil.

Dependent students complete the white areas of the form.

Independent students complete the white areas of the form.

Answer all questions in the sections that pertain to you.  If a question doesn’t apply to you, enter “0”.

Round off all figures to the nearest dollar.  Do not report cents.

Be sure to have all signatures required on your application.

Refer to your and/or parents’ Federal tax returns when completing the application.  If the tax return includes earned income credit, report it on line 44 for the Student, 78 for Parents.

If your parents are separated or divorced, only report the information of the parent you are living with.  If the parent you are living with has remarried, your step-parent’s information must also be included.

If you or your parents complete the application, DO NOT complete the section labeled “Preparer’s Use Only”.

In item 92, Step 6, School Code 001245 will be listed for Mt. San Antonio College.  List other colleges you may attend in the academic year for which you are applying.

Mail FAFSA Application by March 2nd for Cal-Grant or by April 16 for priority at Mt. SAC, or after April 16 for non-priority processing.

Return all supplemental documents to the Financial Aid Office.  Mt. SAC Priority deadline is April 16.

Cal Grant Applicants: - Read the information below:

Mail the FAFSA in the pre-addressed envelope in the booklet, by first-class mail using a certificate of mailing from the Post Office, by March 2nd the postmark deadline.

New Cal Grant Applicants must also file a GPA Verification Form with the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) by the same March 2nd deadline.

If you have completed 24 college units before the Fall Semester , the Admissions Office will electronically submit the GPA Verification to the California Student Aid Commission, therefore you do NOT need to complete a GPA Verification Form.

If you have completed less than 24 college units prior to the Fall Semester, your high school must verify the GPA.  For other information on GPA Verification, please refer to the instructions on the GPA Verification form.

FAFSA :
Question #24:  (State of Residence) To qualify for California Grant Aid the student’s state of legal residence must be listed as “CA”. If left blank, the application will not be considered. Residency for students younger than 18 is determined by the parents’ responses to Questions ---- and ----.  The dates listed in ---- and ---- must be 09-20-01, or prior, and must include a month, day and year to qualify for state aid.
Question #30:  (Educational Level)  If left blank, the Commission will process the student as a third year student for purposes of establishing the GPA cutoff and Cal Grant B Eligibility.  First time college students should check the first box.  Advanced Placement course work should not be considered for determination of year in college.
Question #22-23: (Parent Education( Response for both parents should be provided to receive points for Cal Grant B and Graduate Fellowship scoring.
Question #53-76:  (Parent and Student Income)  Income is best taken from completed Federal 1040, A or EZ forms.  If no 1040, A or EZ has been filed, estimates should be entered from W-2 forms or best available information. No lines should be left blank.  Instead, zeros should be entered if no income was received in that category.  Students who fail to provide parental data and are not found to be independent will not be able to provide this data after the March 2nd deadline.
Question #86-96:  (School Information) At least one California school must be listed to be considered for Cal Grant. List all colleges you may attend during the academic year in which you are applying.  Code for Mt. San Antonio College is 001245.

Section G:  (Asset Information)  New applications who do not provide the asset information and fail the Simplified Needs Test will not be able to provide this data after the March 2nd deadline.  Application will be considered incomplete
