Mt. SAC, along with 18 other Southland community colleges, recently joined forces with Amazon Web Services to look into developing a regionally recognized cloud computing certificate.

Organizers hope that through the project, students will have access to a 15-credit certificate program that focuses on in-demand cloud computing skills. Cloud computing—which delivers vast data capacity to organizations of all types—is considered one of the biggest growth areas in technology today.

The demand for cloud computing skills is increasing in the Los Angeles area, and according to the Institute for Applied Economics at Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp., the need for these skills will create an estimated 2,500 annual job openings annually.

"Mt. SAC is continually assessing the workforce needs of the region and developing modern programs. We're looking forward to joining this initiative," said Mt. SAC Business Dean Jennifer Galbraith.

The project marks the first time a group of community colleges has collaborated with Amazon to offer a certificate in cloud computing. A few of the other local participating colleges include Citrus, Rio Hondo, and Pasadena City College.
