A recent agreement between California’s community colleges and the University of California on a transfer guarantee for community college students is expected boost the number of transfer students by 10 to 15 percent.

The “Enhancing Student Transfer” agreement will guarantee admission for all qualifying California community colleges students to one of the UC’s nine undergraduate campuses.

“This agreement will help more Mt. SAC students and more community college students from across the state realize their higher education goals and give them the opportunity to transfer to a UC campus,” said Mt. SAC President Bill Scroggins.

Under the agreement, students who complete the UC pathways and achieve the required grade point average will be guaranteed admission to a UC campus. The guaranteed admission agreement takes effect for students beginning community college in fall 2019.

In fall 2017, the UC system had 216,747 undergraduate students enrolled, and of that number, 18,703 or about nine percent of them came from California community colleges.

The agreement comes amid growing concern about rising costs and access at UC campuses. The annual UC tuition and fees for California residents is now $12,630. In comparison, full-time state community college students pay $1,104 a year, less than one tenth of the cost of attending a campus in the UC system.
