Gov. Jerry Brown spoke with students and staff at Mt. SAC Veterans Center during a tour of the campus facility with State Senator Josh Newman on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

“For those veterans coming home, we want to make sure it works for the very best,” Brown told an audience of students, staff, and local dignitaries.

The visit to campus follows the passage of a bill authored by Sen. Newman to provide millions in funding for community college veteran resource centers throughout the state. The legislation will provide $5 million annually on an on-going basis for the resource centers.

Brown also praised the work of community colleges within the system of higher education.

“Community colleges have greater potential to respond to the needs of people in the community,” Brown said.

Approximately 1,300 students at Mt. SAC have an affiliation with some branch of the military. The Mt. SAC Veterans Resource Center connects vets with education, support, and services to help them transition back into the community.
