Singcopation, which was formed in 1997, consists of thirteen auditioned singers who specialize in vocal jazz music. During their existence, they have performed numerous concerts at Mt. San Antonio College and have participated in a variety of collegiate festivals and competitions including Monterey, CA and Reno, NV. “Singcopation” performed to standing ovations at the 2001 International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE) Convention, which was held in New York City, the 2003 IAJE Convention, which was held in Toronto, Canada and again in 2005 at the IAJE Convention in Long Beach, California.
“Singcopation” has participated as guest artists for the 2001, 2003 & 2005 L.A. Vocal Jazz Workshop where they performed with Steve Zegree, Michele Weir and Darmon Meader from the “New York Voices” and have won the Downbeat Magazine award for being the number one college vocal jazz group in the country on five occasions, also winning a special Downbeat award in 2008, 2009, 2011 & 2012 for Outstanding Performance. “Singcopation” has performed at the 2002 ACDA Western Regional Convention in Honolulu, Hawaii in a special workshop presentation, gave special performances at B.B. King’s and the Baked Potato nightclubs in Hollywood, were the headline performers for a concert engagement at Lincoln Center in New York City, with special guest artist Darmon Meader and were the headline performers at the Canadian Rocky Mountain Music Festival in Banff. "Singcopation" also won first place honors at the "Next Generation Jazz Competition" on two occasions, thus receiving an invitation to perform at the Monterey Jazz Festival. In the Fall of 2009, these outstanding singers combined with a professional orchestra from Los Angeles to perform “Star Wars In Concert” to sell-out audiences at the Honda Center and the Nokia Theater. In 2010, “Singcopation” traveled to Australia to perform at the ANCA Choralfest Convention in Port Macquarie, won a prestigious platinum medal at the "Xinghai Prize International Competition" in Guangzhou, China, and they have also won the first place Grand Prix award at the " 2011 American International Choral Competition", held in Reno, Nevada.
These outstanding performers have recorded thirteen CDs entitled “Kick That Monkey,” “Mickey’s Diner,” “Wind Machine,” “Harold’s House of Jazz,” “ Stompin’ At The Savoy,” “What Is Hip?,” “Drive,” “Everything Must Change,” a special “10th Anniversary” CD, “How Sweet It Is,” "Singin' In The Rain," "Imagine" and their newest release is called "Something To Believe In." All of these recordings are all available by contacting the Mt. SAC Choral Department. “Singcopation” is also available for private parties and/or club performances.
