1. Q. Do I really have to be 18 and a high school graduate (or equivalent) as it says in the Catalog?
A. Yes. This is a federal requirement for this course. At 18 you become legally responsible for your own actions. Each week you will provide direct patient care in the hospital – you must be legally responsible and accountable for your actions.
Q. Besides the information in the first paragraph at the top of the page regarding age, physicals and background, are there any pre-requisites for EMT?
2. Q. What textbooks does your EMT Program use?
A. We currently use the AAOS Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured, 10th Edition. There are other printed materials such as a Mt.SAC EMT skills manual and Los Angeles County Policies and Procedures documents that we will discuss on the first day of class.
3. Q. How much does the program cost?
A. It is safe to plan for approximately $1000.00 in various costs including registration fees, books and supplies (stethoscopes, scissors, etc.), uniforms, physical exam, drug screen and background checks (mandated by our clinical sites and the state and local certifying agencies). Please note that some of these costs (physical exam for instance) are variable depending upon where you decide to get your physical. If you qualify for any CA state fee waivers, this can greatly decrease the cost of the tuition portion of the above amount.
The physical (incl. drug screen) and background check (FBI and DOJ databases) MUST be completed within the first few weeks of school, so please plan your finances accordingly. We will offer details of how and where to obtain the physicals and background checks in class, so you do not need them prior to beginning class.
Additionally, we also include the BLS for Healthcare Providers (HCP) course as part of the class in the first month on a skills day. While it is worth studying the American Heart Association BLS for HCP text in advance, there is no need to complete a class on your own prior to registering for EMT (we waive the course fee to decrease costs for our students). We only charge the AHA card fee.
4. Q. I have some concerns regarding my background. What are some of the things that could legally disqualify me from program entrance or employment?
A. According to Health and Safety code, fire departments, private ambulance services and hospitals at which our students complete their hospital and pre-hospital experience, there are a number of offenses that can threaten your future career. A few of those are convictions of:
You are entering a professional atmosphere that requires you to act in a responsible manner as an adult. You will be responsible for human life and property; this privilege comes with great responsibility. Please see the links below and contact the appropriate EMS agencies for specific questions regarding these topics. If you are considering employment with a specific agency (fire department, private ambulance company, medical school), it is well worth your time to contact them directly to verify their requirements before beginning your educational career toward that goal.
5. Q. I have heard that this program is very challenging. Is this correct and how can I prepare?
A. Our curriculum does uphold the standards mandated by the National Standards EMS Curriculum dictated by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Los Angeles County EMS Agency. Together, these standards demand a level of excellence of EMTs educated throughout the nation ! We are merely teaching to these national standards, and they demand that EMTs be competent in lifesaving skills and knowledge.
Preparation is best achieved by:
1) Setting your goal of success ; how does getting your EMT Certificate benefit you? YOU have to "buy-in" to your own success and work for it!
2) Be sure that this goal is YOUR goal - that you are not doing it for someone else (father, girlfriend, boyfriend, etc.)
3) Come prepared to work hard - and this means having good study habits (including decreasing distractions in life that could knock you off your path to success). Many of our students admit to never having opened a book in high school and they still "succeeded" with apparently high grades. Unfortunately, this relaxed approach sets students up for failure and they are then shocked thatcollege is very different, let alone our 10 unit course!
6 . Q. I want to take this class, but when I tried to register, it was full. Can I still add?
A. Yes. EMT is a very popular class that fills extremely quickly. Be sure to register at the earliest possible time. If the class is already full, come to the first class meeting for an add code. Do NOT be late! All adds will be done in the first hour of class.
7 . Q. What does “Arrange Hours” for Clinical mean?
A. You will be on campus two days per week in class and you will complete an internship in a local emergency department during those “Arranged” hours. There is some flexibility for you to select one of three local hospitals with which we have a contract (Citrus Valley, Intercommunity Campus, Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center and San AntonioCommunity Hospital). You may also choose the day of the week and time of your shift.
8 . Q. What type of job can I obtain with an EMT-B certificate?
A. Many options are available for you upon receipt of your EMT-B certificate. Traditionally, this certificate has enabled students to get a job with private ambulance companies or fire departments. Additionally, there are positions within emergency departments as “E.D. technicians,” lifeguards, search and rescue team members and others.
9. Q. I finished an EMT program elsewhere and would like college credits for having taken your program. Can I do this?
A. There are a few surrounding community colleges that offer EMT and we look at those on an individual basis. The college does not see private programs as "equivalent" in units and/or content.
You can , however, use your EMT card as a requisite course for entry into our Fire Science Program and academy (please see Fire Technology link below).
10. Q. How do I renew my EMT Certificate?
A. This and other answers regarding renewal requirements (such as what to do in the event of a certificate lapse) can be found on the EMS Agency website . In addition to your Continuing Education hours requirement, you will required to pay the renewal fee and submit the CA State Skills Verification Form that will typically be provided by the course instructor if you are taking a refresher course. The same form can also be found on the CA EMS Authority website .
