Module 2: Search Strategies

This tutorial discusses several search strategies to help students refine their search for information. These strategies include truncation, Boolean operators, and phrase searching. To successfully complete this tutorial, a student will score at least 8 out of 10 on the quiz at the end.

Measurable Objectives

Upon completing this tutorial, students will be able to:

  • identify Boolean operators
  • identify which search strategies broaden a search and which narrow it
  • construct a search using truncation, Boolean operators, and/or phrase searching
  • define what truncation or wild card searching is
  • define phrase searching

  • 2.2. The information literate student constructs and implements effectively designed search strategies.
  • 1.1.d. Defines or modifies the information need to achieve a manageable focus.
  • 2.2.d. Constructs a search strategy using appropriate commands for the information retrieval system selected (e.g. Boolean operators, truncation, and proximity for search engines; internal organizers such as indexes for books.)
