Faculty Guidelines:
(to download a pdf version of these guidelines,
The following guidelines are to help
new and continuing faculty during departmental changes. If you have
any questions concerning our department, please ask Cheryl McGee or
Sherrie Steele at extension 4270. To see the most recent (last 6 months)
additions, Click
Here.
- MATERIALS CHECKOUT
– Media Services
has over 3,000 titles in video, DVD, CD, CDROM, and laser disk
format. Most have been entered into the online library catalog
and may be viewed at http://library.mtsac.edu
from any computer connected to the Internet. You may view the
Media Library collection by clicking on library catalog in the
upper left corner of the library home page. On the following page,
click on the Media Services tab in the upper right corner to receive
information on non-print materials only. Then, by typing in a
keyword and clicking in “Search Everything,” you should
receive the most titles.
- Recent purchases of media
materials may be found by clicking on the blue tab at the
top of the same page marked "Info. Desk." Next, by clicking
on "New Videos and DVDs," a listing will appear of the previous
six months of purchases. After six months, these materials
may be viewed by following the directions for viewing any
Media Services' materials.Faculty Guidelines, Student Guidelines,
and Citation Styles for Video Recordings may be found at the
Media Services site on the Library home page.
- To expedite the check-out
process, we recommend you bring your faculty I.D. We will
scan your I.D. and scan and stamp material(s) to eliminate
the paperwork previously required.
- There is a one-week check-out
period for materials, with a one-week extension if needed.
We cannot extend materials that are overdue. Please call
for extensions on or before the due date. Two items may
be checked out per person by phone or at the counter.
A total of five items may be checked out if booked in
advance.
- Students cannot pick
up materials for faculty without a written note from the
instructor.
- MATERIALS
RETURN - You may return materials to our office in the
Learning Resources Center (LTC-240), in the outside book drop
to the left of the entrance doors to the library, or in the book
drop by the Information Booth near the college entrance off Grand
Avenue. The book drops are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week, including holidays, weekends, and semester breaks. They
are emptied daily. There is also a drop off site in the Student
Learning Office in Building 4.
- ON RESERVE
- You can place any video, DVD, or CD from your personal collection
or any of the Media Services collection on reserve in Media Services
for your students to view. Like the Media Services collection,
your materials never leave the library. You can drop them off
and pick them up any time during office hours. Media Services
materials cannot be placed on reserve for longer than two weeks.
CDROMs cannot be put on reserve because Media Services does not
have computers for student viewing. Please see the Learning Lab
downstairs for information on CDROMs.
- ORDERING VIDEOS,
CDS, OR DVDS FOR PURCHASE – ? Media Services has
a limited budget for purchasing new materials. If we currently
own several titles on a subject you want, it is less likely another
purchase will be made. Please check our
online library catalog for material that could meet your requirements.
The online library catalog may be viewed from your home, office,
or in the Learning Technology Center. If there are no titles covering
your subject, please e-mail your requests to Cheryl
McGee. Having a title and distributor will expedite your request.
Updating our collection with appropriate materials is an ongoing
process.
- STUDENT PRESENTATIONS
– We are aware that more students want to use videos in
classroom presentations. Most of our videos are quite expensive.
For that reason, we request that you pick up and return the videos
that your students require. Videos are checked out in your name
and will be considered your responsibility.
- CLOSED CAPTIONING
- Media Services is working with D.S.P.& S. to ensure that
all students have access to materials. If you discover that you
have a deaf or hard-of-hearing student in your class and use videos,
please notify our department in advance to have materials closed
captioned. Due to the variety in length and difficulty in captioning
videos, please allow enough time for this process. Two weeks per
video is reasonable. In some cases, the tapes are copyguarded
and cannot be captioned. In those cases, we can provide a typed
manuscript of the program for your student.
- MEDIA SERVICES
EQUIPMENT – Media Services supplies multimedia
projectors, overheads, slide projectors, portable screens, DVD
players, TVs, VCRs, and more. Please call our department at ext.
4270 for availability and selection. Forms may be filled out at
the Media Services front desk. Our limit is two requests per phone
call, and the requests must be in our office before 10:00 a.m.
of the working day before it is needed. For example, Monday’s
request must be in our office on or before 10:00 a.m. on the previous
Friday. Students cannot order equipment for faculty or for club
activities. Faculty members are responsible for all media equipment
ordered for student use.
- EQUIPMENT CHECKOUT
– You may phone in or fill out a request form at the front
counter in Media Services. Our limit is two equipment request
forms per phone call. These requests must be in our office before
10:00 am of the working day before it is needed. For example,
Monday’s requests must be in our office on or before 10:00
am on the previous Friday. Students cannot order equipment for
faculty or for club activities. Faculty are responsible for all
media equipment ordered for student use.
- NON-DELIVERY OF
EQUIPMENT – Some classrooms have closets in which
the technicians place ordered equipment. If your classroom has
a closet, please check it before calling our office to report
a non-delivery. Equipment continues to change in appearance. (That
slide projector on a cart could really be a multimedia projector.
A multimedia projector could be delivered in lieu of a video projector).
- UNATTENDED A/V
EQUIPMENT – If you see a piece of equipment in
a classroom that no one is using, please do not remove it without
first calling Media Services, ext. 4270. When equipment is moved
without our knowledge, it’s very time consuming to locate
it.
- EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE
– Please learn how to turn off the data presentation projectors
properly. If they are not turned off properly, a bulb can blow
out, or at the very least, shorten the life of the bulb. Replacement
bulbs cost about $500.00 each to replace. If you are not sure
how to turn off the data presentation projectors, ask for a demonstration
with Robert Avila in Media Services, ext. 4270.
- BULBS –
If a bulb burns out on your slide projector or overhead projector,
you can call our office at ext. 4270, and a technician will replace
it in a timely manner. Many faculty members bring the damaged
bulb to Media Services and pick up a new one. Multimedia projector
bulbs are more difficult to replace and take more time.
- DAMAGED A/V EQUIPMENT
– Please report any damaged or missing equipment to Media
Services, ext. 4270. Often the problem is minor and can be quickly
fixed. More extensive repairs must go into the shop and will take
longer. In some cases, Media Services can supply a replacement
piece of equipment until repairs are made.
- WALL MOUNT SCREENS
– Problems with screens or screen replacements re currently
being handled by the Skill Crafts Department at ext. 4850. A work
order to Maintenance is usually required to replace a screen.
- LOCKING CLASSROOMS
– At times, our schedules necessitate leaving a piece of
equipment in a classroom long before the start of your scheduled
class or it cannot be picked up until long after your class has
adjourned. Please remember to lock the doors of your classroom.
We frequently find the doors unlocked; therefore, the equipment
becomes easily accessible. We have had many pieces of equipment
stolen from classrooms in recent years, especially in the 26 buildings.
Your cooperation is appreciated!
We welcome and encourage any suggestions
for improving our services. We are always looking for better ways
to assist faculty and students with their needs whenever possible.
Thank
you for your continued support!
