Literature Criticism Online (Gale)

provides online access to current volumes of the Gale literary criticism sets, aka the "brown books." LCO currently includes Contemporary Literary Criticism, Twentieth-Century Literary Criticism, Nineteenth-Century Literature Criticism, Literature Criticism from 1400-1800, and Poetry Criticism. Short Story Criticism and Drama Criticism will be added soon. This archive grows all the time, so check LCO often to view recently added volumes for all of these sets.

At this time Twentieth-Century Literary Criticism is the only series for which online access begins with volume 1; however, the Mt. SAC Library owns the earlier print volumes of all of these sets. To locate criticism from our full collection of Gale literary resources, you can search Gale's Lit Index (a link is found on the LCO basic search page) or work with a librarian at the Mt. SAC Library Reference Desk.

Literature Online (ProQuest) A good starting point when searching for literary criticism. Includes articles from scholarly (peer reviewed) journals, book chapters, and tools like the Dictionary of Literary Terms and KnowledgeNotes. Links to some articles also available through in JSTOR and Project Muse (not 100% overlap, so you can try them too). Full-text coverage is usually from the late 1980s to the present. To quickly access literary criticism, click on "Criticism & Reference" (left), then the "Criticism" tab (top/center), then limit your search to "Records with full text only."

Literature Resource Center Literary criticism and biography on notable authors.

MagillOnLiterature Plus (EBSCOhost) If you are looking for background information, overviews, plot summaries, and biographical information about authors this is a good starting point. Sources included are reference materials such as Masterplots and literature encyclopedias. Makes a good study aid but does not include magazine and journal articles. For literary criticism published in journals, try Literature Online (LION), Project MUSE®, or JSTOR. The Library has many more resources related to literary studies, so check with a librarian to explore more.
