Policies and Procedures

Faculty Support Services
  • INTERVENTION:
Services are available to assist faculty in implementing the intervention policy for students who are having difficulty with their classes. The Learning Assistance Center has developed a number of programs that have been successful in assisting students with their course work. Feel free to refer any of your students to the Study Skills Instructor in the Learning Assistance Center.

  • AV AND COMPUTER SOFTWARE:
Many faculty supplement their classroom instruction by having audio and/or videotapes and computer programs available in the LAC. Materials are for use in the LAC only. In addition to materials utilized by the LAC's faculty, there are audio and/or videotapes available for use in the Center for faculty in other areas of the campus.

  • READABILITY LEVELS ON TEXTBOOKS:
The LAC uses the Mac version of Readability Calculations by Micro Power and Light Co. The program assesses the difficulty level of material to a number of formulas including Dale-Chall, Fry, Flesch, and the FOG.

Department Philosophy
As research-based developmental educators, we recognize and value that all learners have their own pathways as well as obstacles to learning. Although we believe students need to assume responsibility for their own learning, we also believe that students learn best in a positive learning environment that includes social interaction. We provide scaffolding through the support structures — the integration of technology, the access to useful resources and professional educators — that help students develop cognitive, metacognitive, and affective strategies.
