Lab Philosophy

"The Skills Lab philosophy is to support students by providing a safe and encouraging environment where they

  • become successful, independent learners
  • meet with knowledgeable, friendly people
  • practice best strategies
  • engage in immediate feedback and reflection."

Skills Lab

The SKILLS LAB, located in the first floor of the Learning Technology Center, is an educational resource that supports our Learning Assistance Center’s (LAC) students learning experience while at Mt. San Antonio College. Individual tutoring is provided by Skills Lab tutors for students enrolled in classes in the LAC.

Classes supported by Skills Lab tutoring are LERN 48 Basic Math Skills Review, LERN 49 Math Skills Review, LERN 81 Improving Writing Skills, READ 70 Improving Reading Comprehension, and READ 80 Developing Reading Comprehension. All classes assign lab as a part of their class. The assigned work is explained, discussed and/or corrected by the Skills Lab personnel. Students complete 24 hours per semester. The Skills Lab personnel are also available to non-credit and credit Skills Development students for assistance as well.

The Skills Lab has individual carrels for each student to sit and complete their lab assignment. The Skills Lab also has round tables available for group study work.

Department Philosophy
As research-based developmental educators, we recognize and value that all learners have their own pathways as well as obstacles to learning. Although we believe students need to assume responsibility for their own learning, we also believe that students learn best in a positive learning environment that includes social interaction. We provide scaffolding through the support structures — the integration of technology, the access to useful resources and professional educators — that help students develop cognitive, metacognitive, and affective strategies.
