Policies and Procedures

General Writing Center Policies:

  • You need to register each semester.
  • You must bring a current, new student ID (you cannot use the center without a student ID—no exceptions!).
  • You need to be scanned out and pick up your student ID before leaving the lab.
  • Cell phone use is prohibited.
  • No food, gum, or drink is permitted.

Computer Lab Policies:

  • You must work on Mt. SAC assignments or Mt. SAC course related writing.

  • MP3 players can be used, but the volume must not distract other students.
  • Personal items (backpacks, purses, etc.) must be taken with you when you leave the computer station. Any items left behind will be put in a cubby at the front desk to help prevent theft.

Tutoring Policies:

  • You may receive one hour of tutoring per day. This hour can be comprised of either walk-in and/or appointments, but the combined amount of tutoring per day cannot exceed one hour.
  • You may have no more than two 30-minute tutorials in a row.
  • If you do not respond when you are called for walk-in tutoring, you will be removed from the walk-in list. No exceptions.
  • If you are not ready when you are called from the walk-in list, you will be skipped and put at the bottom of the walk-in list.
  • If you are five or more minutes late for your appointment, you will lose that appointment.

What to Expect from a Tutor:

  • All tutors will provide competent, friendly, courteous service.
  • Tutors will work with students in a conversational manner on any aspect of a paper from brainstorming to grammar and citation.
  • Tutors will not write, edit, or proofread papers for students.
  • Tutors will work on only one writing assignment during a session.
  • Tutors cannot assign or predict grades.

Workshop Policies:

  • If you are ten or more minutes late, you will not receive a verification form for the workshop.
  • You must stay for the duration of the workshop to receive a verification form.
  • If you text or sleep during workshops, you will not receive a verification form.

Unauthorized Use of the Writing Center and Student Behavior:

  • Students not registered for the Writing Center are not permitted to remain in the Center.
  • No children are allowed in the Center due to legal and insurance issues.
  • Unauthorized use or misuse of any Humanities Division computer system or its components will result in disciplinary action in accordance with Student Discipline Policy (A. R. & P. 609) and the California Education and Penal Code.

Please note: The Writing Center cannot serve as a study hall or study group location. Students, by California law, must be using one of the services of the Center (tutoring, lab, workshops) or writing a paper to be in the Writing Center. Students in need of study space are invited to use the library in Building 6. Any tutoring that takes place in the Writing Center needs to be authorized by the Writing Center.
