The Mt. San Antonio College department of Communication is dedicated to helping students develop and improve their understanding of human communication through theoretical and practical exploration of this diverse field.

Communication courses can be used to satisfy the vast majority of general education and transfer requirements and students can also complete their Mt. SAC Associates Degree with an emphasis in Communication.

A 2010 survey of employers by the  National Association of Colleges and Employers  ranked communication skills as the #1 attribute they seek in potential employees.  Attention to our communication competency is critical to achieving excellence; Even presidential candidates and top CEOs routinely participate in training to improve their communication ability. Students in any field of study will benefit from taking courses in this field and/or participating in departmental activities and organizations.

Students enrolled in a com Speaker at Fall 2012 intramural munication course at Mt. SAC can receive learning support through our Speech and Sign Success Center  (SSSC) located on the ground floor of building 26B. Video recording suites are available and tutors are also available for both drop-in and scheduled appointments for assistance.

The Mt. SAC Department of Communication is home to our ten-time national championship FORENSICS TEAM. Forensics students compete in speech and debate competitions across the US and internationally against other two-year colleges as well as four-year colleges and universities. For information about joining the Mt. SAC Forensics Team, email  forensics@mtsac.edu.

 Students interested in a communication degree or future four-year major in the field are urged to join the Communication Club. This group participates in field trips to transfer schools, learns more about careers in the field, and develops skills through on-campus activities. Email advisor Professor Danny Cantrell for information at dcantrell3@mtsac.edu.  The First meeting for Spring Semester (no winter meetings) will be on Tuesday, March 4, in location TBA.2013 Phi Rho Pi National Champions!

Many campus and community events are hosted by the department each year, including fall and spring forensics showcases (called “Evening with Forensics”), two intramural speech competitions for students enrolled in SPCH 1A, and the Black History Month Speech contest held each February.  Annually, the department also awards more than $6000 in scholarships to students for their excellence in communication studies.
