Fall 2012 Newsletter

Dear Colleagues:
Welcome to a new academic year full of exhilarating beginnings and interesting challenges! I always enjoy the sense of energy and renewal in the fall semester.
|
We are delighted to welcome two new distinguished full-time faculty members: Cecelia Thay in the Child Development Department and Bill Roche in the Computer Information Systems Department. We also welcome Tamika Addison in her permanent position of Director of the Child Development Center. These three individuals are a great addition to our elite team. We wish our new members every success and hope that they will enjoy their years at Mt.SAC.
We are excited about the impending opening of the newly remodeled Kitchen; work on it began in June and will be completed just in time for the fall semester. The Management department is already packed and looking forward to moving into the new classrooms located in building 21 B and C.
The 2012-2013 academic year signals the start of a new budget cycle. As you know, funding for Mt.SAC and for higher education statewide remains a critical issue. Even though we are faced with additional cuts, I strongly believe that, through collaboration and a staunch focus on students, we will persevere. I wish to congratulate you all on the continuous great work that you do every day in the classroom.
As always, the division staff and management are here to support you. Here's to a great new academic year!
Sincerely,
Dr. Joumana McGowan, Dean of Business

Cyber Security Team Wins National Title
Mt. San Antonio College has long been noted for its success in sports. For instance, the campus' football and soccer teams both have received national titles in recent years. And now another of the community college's teams is hoisting a national championship trophy!
|
Mt. SAC's cyber team (coached by our CIS Professor Jim Gau) recently defeated DePaul University in the National Cyber League Championship match-up held in Orlando, Fla. The championship was the culmination of the inaugural National Cyber League season in which around 30 teams from across the country competed for a chance at the title.
By the end of an eight-hour battle that had both eight-member teams playing offense and defense, the second-ranked Mt. SAC had beaten the school at the top.
"DePaul was ranked No. 1 and Mt. SAC was No. 2, so it was nice that the No. 1 team faced off against the No. 2 team," said Chris Nila, team captain. The cyber security competition involved the two teams trying to capture each other's flags and ward off attacks. Both were tasked with trying to break into the other team's system to steal fake social security numbers set up for the competition, call signs, and license plate numbers. Mt. SAC captured 16 of DePaul's 25. DePaul was not able to grab any of Mt. SAC's. Congratulations Jim and the Cybersecurity Defense Team. We are so proud!!

The goal of the Accounting, Finance and Management Club is to provide students with opportunities for community service, networking, professional growth, and fun! This year with a dynamic group of club officers and an all-time high of 50 active members, it was a year of accomplishments:
|
Community Service: Students gave back to their community.
Networking: This year students attended and hosted conferences exposing them to a wide variety of business professionals and organizations.
First annual SIC (Student Innnovation Conference): AFM officers and advisors were able to attend the FAME conference at San Francisco State University in Fall 2011.
Student Quotes:
- "Networking, experience, and quality of life lessons all in one place! Whether you plan to pursue business as a career or not, you will definitely gain something from AFM!" - Asfara Noormohamed
- "AFM Club is Fun, Simple and Beautiful!" - Dzulfiqar Widjaja
- "AFM has shaped and developed me as a person. I never could have imagined the amount of impact AFM would have on my life when first stepping into those doors. As President, my leadership and organizational skills were revolutionized. I learned to invest into others successfully and find others willing to invest into me. If done right, the power that an on-campus club can harness is amazing. It can create so much good for the student body as a whole. I recommend every student gets active on campus in a club and pushes the limits of what they are capable of--because you never know what kind of unexpected opportunities can arise." - Kyle Kearney, AFM President

The child development department has been granted a $220,000 workforce initiative grant through Los Angeles Universal Preschool (LAUP). The LAUP workforce initiative grant aims to meet significant challenges the early care and education (ECE) field has faced in attracting and maintaining a workforce that is adequately skilled, well prepared, and culturally and linguistically reflective of the children and families being served. This project will include 3 tiers - recruitment from high school, completion of Mt. SAC child development certificates and degrees and transfer to 4-year university to complete a BA in Child Development.
|
This innovative workforce initiative grant will support student completion of child development certificates, permit, transfer and degree requirements through dedicated advisement, workshops, course work and significant financial aid. The workforce initiative project is part of a seven community college collaboration including Los Angeles City College, Los Angeles Valley College, Santa Monica City College, Pierce College, East Los Angeles College, Long Beach City College and Mt. SAC.
We are excited about the many supports this grant will provide for child development students. Direct financial support and incentive is what students desire most and we are thrilled to be able to address this need. Tony Henry will be overseeing this grant and we will also hire dedicated personnel to work on this project. The grant is funded annually and renewable each year through 2016. We are working out all the details of the project during the summer and aim to serve student needs beginning the fall 2012 semester.

Nutrition and Food Corner
How "NEAT" Are You?
Sorry, this article isn't about organization and being tidy. NEAT is an acronym for Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. Simply speaking NEAT is the idea that expending calories through the "activities of daily living" plays an important calorie burning role and may even contribute to weight loss. The researcher behind NEAT is Dr. James Levine, a professor of physiology and bioengineering at the Mayo Clinic, and an internationally renowned expert in obesity. Dr. Levine has blamed obesity on the "sitting disease". We just are not moving enough! Increasing our NEAT means moving more and incorporating movement in as many daily activities as we possibly can. Americans spend hours each day sitting in office chairs, in a cars commuting, in classrooms, watching TV, computer time, watching sports, etc. Below are some suggestions to incorporate NEAT into your daily routines. I'm sure you can think of many more.
|
|
-
Stand up! Yes, standing burns about 20 more calories per hour than sitting and walking burns even more. Try taking "standing breaks" or "walking breaks" throughout your day. Set a timer to remind you to take these breaks. Pace the classroom when lecturing. It will keep you and your students alert. Go ahead stand up right now and read the rest of this article.
-
Buy a pedometer and start walking! Pedometers are a great way to assess your level of NEAT. They are relatively inexpensive. A good one costs about $20. Each week, try to increase your daily step count by 1,000 steps/day, with a goal of reaching at least 10,000 steps per day which is equivalent to about five miles. Create friendly step-count competition with friends and co-workers which can also be surprisingly fun, and is a great way to promote increased physical activity.
-
Take the stairs. Opt for the stairs instead of the elevator. And when you take the stairs try taking two-at-a-time. But watch your step. Safety first!
-
Active transportation. Walk or bike to work if possible. If you drive, park as far away as you can to incorporate a quick walk to your office or classroom.
-
Have "walk" meetings. If you need to talk to a friend or colleague about something, ask him/her to go for a short 5-10 minute walk with you. Talk to your boss about holding "active" meetings where participants are allowed to walk or stand and march in place if they wish to move or stretch. See the link below to read the article "I Put in 5 Miles at the Office".
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/18/health/nutrition/18fitness.html
-
Drink plenty of water. We should be well hydrated always, but the real reason for this tip, is the fact that drinking water means frequent trips to the restroom. You guessed it, make those restroom trips into "power walks".
-
Be "NEAT" while watching TV. Of course we all need a relaxing break from our busy days. If TV watching is your choice for unwinding, why not take advantage of those commercials and do something active like squats, pushups, jumping jacks or just walk around. You may get a few stares and odd looks from family and friends, but who knows?...you may start a NEAT revolution!
|
Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. How "NEAT" are you? If you can think of other NEAT suggestions, please email me. I'd love to hear from you!
