I extend warmest salutations to you all and I hope that your summer break was rejuvenating and relaxing. Welcome back to a new academic year, new challenges, and a flood of new students.
A special welcome to our two new full-time faculty members: Marty Ramey (Paralegal) and Niki Tran (Interior Design)! We wish you every success and hope you will enjoy your time at Mt.SAC. You are joining one of the finest community colleges in California. Congratulations to Kisha Williamson (Child Development) and Tony Henry (Child Development) on their Tenure! We are glad you're part of our elite team.
The 2011-2012 academic year signals the start of a new budget cycle. As you are aware, funding for Mt.SAC and for higher education statewide remains a critical issue. Over the next few months, the Governor and legislators will be reviewing the state budget. I will continue to share information with you as it becomes available.
Last spring semester, during efforts to develop our Business Division Mission and Goals, our faculty, staff, and managers created an ambitious internal division agenda. Our plan includes raising the already high quality of our academic programs; using state-of-the-art technology in the classrooms; developing stronger partnerships with local businesses and increasing internship opportunities, developing a student-centered class schedule that meets our students' needs; and making improvements in our facilities. Achieving our Business Division Plan depends on our working together as a team.
Undoubtedly, great opportunities await us in the coming months and academic year. With confidence that this will be an exciting and rewarding year for us, I offer you my best wishes for an enjoyable and successful semester and academic year at Mt.SAC.
Please take some time to peruse the Business Division Newsletter and thanks to all the faculty, staff, and managers who participated in the development of the newsletter.
Sincerely,
Dr. Joumana McGowan

Mt. Sac's Accounting and Finance Club is a popular way for students of all majors to gain valuable business networking experience, see great speakers and just have fun.
Professor Brenda Domico has been helping students fulfill these goals for the last 14 years. Alumni of the club have gone on to some great accomplishments, including transferring to USC, UCLA, UC Berkeley, etc. Also, there have been numerous students who claim that their experience in the AF club at Mt. SAC helped them obtain internships, part-time work in the business industry, and scholarships.
Next semester the club will have an Alumni Day to give current members a chance to network and learn from our alumni.
This year the club is excited to add Management Professor Tom McFarland as a co-advisor. The blending of Accounting, Finance and Management will provide students with a well rounded business experience. According to Tom "adding a management orientation to an already successful club is ideal. Accountants need management skills and all managers need a financial background."
The real success story here is the students who make all these things happen. We provide the structure and framework for them to be successful and they always exceed our expectations.
Some exciting News: Adam Prohoroff (our president from the Fall semester) was named as a national scholar. Congratulations Adam !

The Child Development Department hosted their annual Awards and Scholarship Tea at the Barbara Greenwood Kindergarten Cottage in Pomona.
This historical site was the first Kindergarten classroom in the area. This historical setting is the perfect location for this event.
We are pleased to announce that ten Child Development students in our major were awarded over $3000 in scholarships at the awards reception that was held on Friday, June 3rd.
Each semester the Child Development Department provides scholarships and award applications for students in the major in over ten categories.
Child Development Students from all walks of life, course work level and professional experiences are encouraged to apply.

Congratulations to Professors Alan Lawson, Michael Eyre and Advisor Lloyd Martin for their hard work and success with the Mock Trial Team last year. They are looking forward to another successful year. With Professor Lawson's retirement, Michael and Lloyd will continue leading and training our students for the Mock Trials. A big Thanks to Professor Lawson for his dedication these past years in this endeavor.
Also, congratulations go out to Professor Lis Eatman and two of her students, Keiry Perez and Alyssa Jeong, for placing in the top six at the AIA (American Institute of Architects) 2:1 Competition, winning a $1,000 prize! Mt SAC was the only 2 year school to place this year and surpassed a few four year schools such as Art Institute and Woodbury University! We are so thrilled, overjoyed and elated for our students!

As you develop your syllabi each semester for your courses, please make sure you are following and teaching according to the Official Course Outline of Record (COR) which is available to you over the web through WebCMS, the college's public course management system.
You can view and print off the official course outline of record by going to WebCMS and selecting your course discipline and number in the "Public Access" portion of the WebCMS homepage.

DOES YOUR OFFICE NEED A MAKEOVER?
A "HEALTH" MAKEOVER THAT IS?
It starts with YOU!
Learn how to start a HEATHY OFFICE PROGRAM
Here are 5 simple steps to get started:
1. EAT BREAKFAST!
Countless studies have shown the importance of this often overlooked meal especially in the area of weight loss and weight control. Start your day off right by "breaking" the "fast" = BREAKFAST!
This meal is the kick off to your day both physically and mentally.
Not hungry when you wake up? Train your body to accept breakfast by eating something light within one hour of waking. Try these simple delicious suggestions: whole grain toast or English muffin with low sugar fruit spread or peanut butter, a bowl of oatmeal, whole grain cereal with low fat or skim milk, low-fat granola bar, low fat yogurt, breakfast burrito, or make a fruit and yogurt smoothie.
No time for breakfast at home? Donate a toaster to the office lunchroom and bring your bread or English muffin with you to work.
Who knows, you may start the breakfast trend and become a healthy role model (read on).
2. BECOME A HEALTHY ROLE MODEL
Fill that desk candy jar with healthy snacks that you enjoy. e.g. healthy crackers, almonds, dried fruit, or even fresh fruit. Be a good influence and offer these delicious "healthy" alternatives to your co-workers. They may just start bringing their own or you can start a Healthy Snacks Fund. (see below)
3. START A HEALTHY SNACKS FUND
Ask interested participants for contributions to this fund which can be used for the weekly or bi-monthly purchasing of healthy snacks. Alternate responsible shoppers and keep a safe box and record of funds.
4. HEALTHY CELEBRATIONS & MEETINGS
Encourage healthy meetings and celebrations at work. This doesn't mean you have to give up cake and ice-cream, just try to offer healthier alternatives like fresh fruits and vegetables at your celebrations and meetings.
5. HEALTHY EATING AND GOOD NUTRITION DO NOT STAND ALONE.
NUTRITION + FITNESS = HEALTH
Incorporate a fitness plan into your busy lifestyle by making it a priority. The U.S. Surgeon General recommends that Americans get 30 to 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity exercise on most days of the week. Ask your office mates to join you on a walk or run after work. Not sure where to start? Go to the experts right here at Mt. SAC! The very qualified and very friendly staff of the
Exercise Science & Wellness Center
is here to help you. Join today for a great price and get the service and expertise you deserve for a healthier you. Call Ext. 4625!
Remember, your health starts with YOU!
