Established in September 2006 as a spin-off of Family and Consumer Science Department,
the newest academic department at Mt. San Antonio College traces its roots to the
founding of the college. The department has had a long and varied journey through its
60 year history. In 1964, under the leadership of Al Sherman, dean of agriculture,
Phyllis Specht was hired as its only full time department member.
The newly reconfigured Department of Home Economics set out to fulfill a lofty vision
of serving 1,000 students and diversify to meet the vocational needs of the community.
That dream has come true and the department enrollment has nearly quadrupled his goal
and represents approximately 23% of the Business Division.

Building on a strong foundation, the department has moved far beyond homemaking.
The last decade has seen dramatic changes as our generalist Home Economists have retired.
Currently, the disciplines in the department are: Consumer Services, Fashion Merchandising
and Design, Hospitality and Restaurant Management, Interior Design, and Nutrition/Foods.
The nine members of our new team have advanced degrees in their disciplines and long term
industry experience. The addition of business and industry acumen has enriched
each discipline and enhanced the classroom experience for our students.
Always innovative and forward thinking the department launched two new disciplines in
2001. Fashion Design and Hospitality and Restaurant Management were added and
are realizing amazing growth with students participating in statewide competition and
moving to lucrative careers and/or transferring to local and national universities.

We look forward to new buildings but meanwhile inside our beloved "row" buildings our
classrooms contain the newest technologies. Many programs are training
students on industry specific hardware and software programs. Gone are the
slide and transparency projectors with both faculty and students using technology on
a daily basis.
Our collective disciplines have received statewide recognition as progressive educators
from the California Community College Chancellor. Faculty continue to actively
participate in shared governance while maintaining leadership roles statewide and in
industry organizations.
As we move forward, we recognize that our past is our present and our future.
Thanks to visionaries such as Al Sherman, Phyllis Specht and subsequent faculty and
administrators, the Consumer Science and Design Technologies Department is well positioned
to continue our mission to be proactive and pioneering state and nationwide leaders in
our disciplines and pivotal members in the college’s future growth.
