PSYC 40 Course Image
This course provides a basic overview of the helping processes.  Stresses application of counseling theories, helping skills, and consultation theories to allow exploration of self as a helper and learn facilitating skills to bring about change.   Emphasis on establishing rapport, obtaining information and developing a supportive relationship in a variety of mental health settings.   Students may not receive credit for both PSYC 40 and MENT 40.
(54 hours lecture;      Degree appropriate)

Course Measurable Objectives:

  1. Evaluate effectiveness of specific theories, concepts, and methodologies used in counseling both in video & practice situations.
  2. Demonstrate awareness of personal skills in the helping professions.
  3. Determine where and in which circumstances particular counseling skills and methods are most applicable and appropriate.
  4. Practice individual, one-on-one counseling skills in mock counseling sessions.
  5. Examine and evaluate in writing and oral critique general, legal, ethical, moral and professional concerns in connection with counseling; include related controversial areas and questions such as malpractice, liability, confidentiality, informed consent, record-keeping, and termination.
  6. Demonstrate basic helping microskills including nonverbal skills, listening skills, reflecting, paraphrasing, challenging, and goal setting.
