This course provides a basic overview of the helping processes. Stresses
application of counseling theories, helping skills, and consultation theories to allow
exploration of self as a helper and learn facilitating skills to bring about change.
Emphasis on establishing rapport, obtaining information and developing a supportive
relationship in a variety of mental health settings.
Students may not receive credit for both PSYC 40 and MENT 40.

Course Measurable Objectives:
- Evaluate effectiveness of specific theories, concepts, and methodologies used in counseling both in video & practice situations.
- Demonstrate awareness of personal skills in the helping professions.
- Determine where and in which circumstances particular counseling skills and methods are most applicable and appropriate.
- Practice individual, one-on-one counseling skills in mock counseling sessions.
- Examine and evaluate in writing and oral critique general, legal, ethical, moral and professional concerns in connection with counseling; include related controversial areas and questions such as malpractice, liability, confidentiality, informed consent, record-keeping, and termination.
- Demonstrate basic helping microskills including nonverbal skills, listening skills, reflecting, paraphrasing, challenging, and goal setting.
