This course is designed to give the student a knowledge and an appreciation of children's
books, both fiction and non-fiction, from around the world.
Special emphasis is given to analysis and interpretation of thematic and literary elements,
suitability for age group, quality of writing and illustration, award-winning books,
and issues related to cultural patterns, bias and persuasiveness.

Course Measurable Objectives:
- Identify themes commonly found in children's stories and poetry.
- Analyze narrative and expository texts, from a range of cultures, for both literary elements and formal structure.
- Analyze both implicit and explicit themes and interpret both literal and figurative meanings in texts, including picture books, folktales, myths, fairy tales and oral tradition, using textual and visual support for inferences, conclusions and generalizations they draw from any work.
- Analyze the variety of social and political biases and their implications in world literature written for children.
- Select age-appropriate fiction and non-fiction reading material for children at the emerging reader through advanced reader stages.
