This course is intended for students without previous exposure to Chinese.
Begins to develop the ability to converse, read, and write in Mandarin Chinese.
Includes the study of essentials of pronunciation, vocabulary, idioms, and grammatical
structures along with an introduction to Chinese culture.

Course Measurable Objectives:
- Use material learned in class in basic, daily conversation.
- Know the fundamental cultural and language features of Mandarin Chinese.
- Convey information about themselves to other classmates.
- Write at novice level, i.e. write simple dialogues by mainly quoting commonly used fixed expressions.
- Identify basic linguistic differences between their native language and Mandarin Chinese.
