Explores art as a creative process and the role of an artist in contemporary and past societies approached through analysis of art exhibitions and artist's studio visitations.   Emphasis on visual principles and content of historic and contemporary art works.   Examines the dynamic and history of public art display and the nature of exhibition design with an overview of art movements, styles, symbols, theories and terms.
 
(36 hours lecture;   72 hours lab;      Degree applicable, CSU)

Course Measurable Objectives:

  1. Recognize, define and appropriately apply design terminology in evaluative oral and written discussions, analysis and critiques.
  2. Identify the style of a work of art.
  3. Recognize the various purposes of art in Western and non-Western society.
  4. Recognize symbolism within art works of various periods and cultures including contemporary.
  5. Identify principles of composition as they are applied in different types of works; classical, primitive, contemporary.
  6. Apply basic design concepts to analyze the success of art display within any given space.
  7. Apply elements of design and principles of composition in creating an exhibition announcement.
  8. Analyze contemporary artists' work for parallels to historical styles, symbols and content.
  9. Synthesize historical/contemporary art terms, issues and concepts in order to write an evaluative paper about the relationship of an artist's work with the artist's statement.
  10. Evaluate concepts, issues and designs related to exhibiting artwork, both orally and in writing.
