As data not only inundates U.S. companies but becomes more vital to business success,
the pool of database professionals has swelled faster than other IT-related jobs.
The number of people calling themselves database administrators jumped 10% from a year
ago and 36% since 2001, according to InformationWeek's analysis of the latest Bureau of
Labor Statistics data used each month to determine the unemployment rate.
That compares with a 0.4% dip in the overall IT workforce in the last four years.
Demand for database professionals is expected to continue. Labor Statistics projects
a 66% growth in jobs through 2010. Only seven other occupations in all job
categories will have a greater growth rate. More evidence: As of last week, U.S.
employers posted 2,821 database-administrator jobs on employment Web site Dice.com
last week, up 41% from a year ago.
The Database and Database Management Program at Mt. SAC offers one (1) A.S. Degree:

Computer: Database Management Systems Degree (S0706)
The Computer Information Systems major is a two-year program leading to the Associate
in Science Degree. It prepares students for employment in the Information Technology industry
in such areas as application software development, computer systems security, and database management.
The program is designed to prepare students for employment following graduation.
Students wishing a Bachelor's Degree (transfer program) should meet with
a counselor or advisor to discuss transferability of courses.
Coursework includes a list of core courses and additional courses for each option.
This option concentrates on the design, development, and maintenance of relational
databases on microcomputers.  The Database Management degree includes coursework
in the design, development, and maintenance of relational databases. Students
choosing this degree have the option of selecting either the Microsoft or Oracle concentration.

This curriculum is designed for returning CIS professionals with several years
experience or current students who have completed several CIS courses.
This program of study will prepare the student to work and manage data using a
PC-based Database Management System. The program covers the major topics
of the Microsoft MOUS certification exam for Microsoft Access.
