CISM 11 - Systems Analysis
                and Design  (3.5 units)
This course helps the student develop a basic understanding of information systems, general system solutions, and the discipline of systems analysis in relation to the information systems life cycle.   The student will develop skills in applying the tools, techniques, and consepts of systems analysis to information systems development.  Topics covered include:
  • Cost/Benefit Analysis
  • Systems Development Life Cycle
  • Data Flow Diagrams
  • Data Dictionary
  • Outsourcing and Prototyping
  • User Interface and I/O Design
  • Entity-Relationship (ER) Diagrams
  • Normalization, and many more...
(54 hours lecture;  27 hours lab;    Degree applicable, CSU, UC)
Advisory Prerequisite:  ( CISB 15 - Microcomputer Applications or COMP 12 )
                                           and  CISB 11 - Computer Information Systems

Course Measurable Objectives:

  1. Utilize presentation software to deliver business presentations.
  2. Assess project feasibility by performing a preliminary investigation.
  3. Analyze and design projects using data flow diagrams.
  4. Examine data requirements and design a systems data structure.
  5. Assess user requirements and design reports.
  6. Develop a system implementation plan.

Course Level Student Learning Outcomes:


Students completing CISM 11 - Systems Analysis and Design will know:
  1. how to utilize Data Flow Diagrams to describe how data flows through an organization.
  2. how to design the logical structure of a database.
  3. the six phases of the system development life cycle and two activities that occur in each phase.
