CISB 11 Course Image
This begining course provides the student with a basic introduction to computer information systems which includes but is not limited to:
  • computer hardware
  • computer software
  • data communications
  • computer ethics
  • computer security
  • systems analysis and design
  • the Internet
  • problem solving
  • programming in multiple languages

Course Measurable Objectives:

  1. Identify and define basic computer terms
  2. Solve simple business problems using a personal computer and word processing, spreadsheet and database software.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to perform intermediate spreadsheet tasks including: entering data, cell operations, absolute versus relative addresses, formatting, functions, copying, pasting, inserting data, charting data, adding text to the worksheet and printing options.
  4. Write, debug, and execute elementary computer programs using a variety of computer languages and platforms.
  5. Analyze and produce a written report on a current article dealing with computer hardware or software.
  6. Describe basic computer security strategies.

Course Level Student Learning Outcomes:


Students completing CISB 11 - Computer Information Systems will:
  1. know the six phases of the system development life cycle and two activities that occur in each phase.
  2. know the four primary operations of a computer and the hardware that performs these operations.
  3. be able to define the following Internet terms: Internet, World Wide Web, browser, IP address, URL
  4. be able to identify five ways to protect a computer from harmful attacks.

CISB 15 Course Image
This beginning course gives the student an introduction to the Windows operating system and the Office suite of applications.  Solving simple business problems using up-to-date software such as:
  • browsers
  • word processing
  • spreadhseet
  • database management
  • presentation
  • integrating these applications
The student receives hands-on instruction on a Windows-based personal computer.

Course Measurable Objectives:

  1. Manage disks, organize files, and run programs using an operating system.
  2. Locate information on the web and manage e-mail program.
  3. Create and edit documents with a word processor.
  4. Use spreadsheet software for business applications.
  5. Create files, update files and generate reports using database management software.
  6. Design slide presentations with presentation software.
  7. Integrate software to create business applications.

Course Level Student Learning Outcomes:


Students completing CISB 15 - Microcomputer Applications will:
  1. be able to effectively use formulas and functions in worksheets.
  2. be able to use Microsoft Word to create professional documents needed to create a computer security report.
  3. understand the importance of continuing their education in computer literacy.

CISB 16 Course Image
This course teaches the basic skills and in-depth practice operating the Apple Macintosh computer.  Includes introduction to the operating system, paint, draw, word-processing, database, spreadsheet, and multi-media applications.

Note: This course was renamed from COMP 10.
(27 hours lecture)
(Degree applicable, CSU)
(May be taken for option of letter grade or Credit / No Credit.)

Course Measurable Objectives:

  1. Operate and manipulate the mouse to access all levels of the file structure and to do all desktop-related tasks.
  2. Use the operating system to manage files and folders.
  3. Use Apple System Preferences.
  4. Utilize keyboard shortcuts instead of the mouse.
  5. Prepare and maintain removable media for file transfer.
  6. Create documents in a variety of applications.
  7. Create a hierarchical file structure.
  8. Utilize multitasking features.

Course Level Student Learning Outcomes:


Students completing CISB 16 - Macintosh Applications will:
  1. be able to correctly identify the names and locations of key areas of the Finder Window.
  2. successfully create a 15 picture iPhoto slideshow.

CISB 21 Course Image
This beginning course gives the student an introduction to spreadhseet concepts using
Microsoft Excel.  Topics covered include:
  • formatting
  • formula and function use
  • charting
  • linking worksheets
  • pivot tables
  • macros
  • VBA code basics
The student receives hands-on instruction on a Windows-based personal computer.
(54 hours lecture;  54 hours lab;    Degree applicable)

Course Measurable Objectives:

  1. Analyze, create, edit and format various business-related spreadsheets.
  2. Use formulas and functions in worksheets.
  3. Effectively create and use charts to visually enhance worksheet data.
  4. Create and edit macros to make using workbooks easier for users.
  5. Display worksheets on the Web.

Course Level Student Learning Outcomes:


Students completing CISB 21 - Microsoft Excel will be able to:
  1. properly format a worksheet, ensuring that it looks professional.
  2. effectively use formulas and functions in worksheets.

CISB 31 Course Image
This course provides extensive hands-on instruction using Microsoft Word and its editing, formatting, and language tools to create, revise and format various business and report documents.  Also create flyers, newsletters, and other publication documents using advanced formatting techniques and tools.

Students who repeat this course will improve skills through further instruction and practice.

Note: This course was renamed from COMP 20.
(54 hours lecture;   54 hours lab   Degree applicable)
(May be taken two times for credit.)
(May be taken for option of letter grade or Credit / No Credit.)

Course Measurable Objectives:

  1. Create, edit, store, and print files using Microsoft Word.
  2. Format text, paragraphs, and layout effectively and efficiently.
  3. Utilize Word's language and reference tools.
  4. Integrate text and graphics in publication documents (i.e. flyer, newsletter, brochure, etc.)
  5. Create and manipulate headers/footers, footnotes/endnotes, page numbering, and watermarks.
  6. Create and format tables and charts created in Word or imported from a spreadsheet file.
  7. Apply, modify, and create styles.
  8. Utilize Word's outlining feature effectively.
  9. Generate mass mailings, mailing labels, and a directory using Word's mail merge feature.
  10. Utilize sort and query techniques.
  11. Generate index, table of contents, and table of authorities.

Course Level Student Learning Outcomes:

  1. Students completing CISB 31 - Microsoft Word will be able to create a Word document in which text, paragraphs, and layout are formatted effectively and efficiently.
  2. Students completing CISB 31 - Microsoft Word will be able to use Word's mail merge feature to generate customized letters and mailing labels in mass.

CISB 51 Course Image
This course is an overview and basic instruction using one of the most popular presentation software packages.  Recommended for all students who need to know how to create presentations.  Not recommended for Office Technology majors.

Note: This course was renamed from COMP 50.
(54 hours lecture;     Degree applicable, CSU)

Course Measurable Objectives:

  1. Develop storyboards to plan presentations.
  2. Create presentations using different methods.
  3. Create and print audience handouts and speaker notes.
  4. Use editing techniques to modify and format presentations.
  5. Use AutoShapes to create graphics.
  6. Use the insert feature to find and add clipart, sounds and media clips.
  7. Create charts, organizational charts, and tables.

Course Level Student Learning Outcomes:


Students completing CISB 51 - Microsoft PowerPoint will be able to:
  1. create a visual slide presentation to include text, graphic objects, design theme, slide transition, and object animation.
  2. create a storyboard to assist them in the design and development of a visual presentation.

CISB 61 Course Image
This course uses popular desktop publishing software to integrate text and graphics to design, edit, and produce high-quality business publications.

Note: This course was renamed from COMP 60.
(54 hours lecture;Degree applicable, CSU)
(May be taken for option of letter grade or Credit / No Credit.)

Course Measurable Objectives:

  1. Define desktop publishing.
  2. Create various publications through the use of templates or custom design.
  3. Develop appropriate design aspects for a given publication.
  4. Manage the flow of publication stories in text boxes.
  5. Integrate text, graphic objects, and other design elements to create professional-looking business publications.
  6. Prepare publications for printing.

Course Level Student Learning Outcomes:


Students completing CISB 61 - Desktop Publishing Software will:
  1. demonstrate knowledge of the planning guidelines intended to assist them in developing appropriate design for a given publication.
  2. demonstrate the ability to effectively produce a variety of professional-looking business publications (at least five)--i.e. newsletter, flyer, brochure, letterhead, business card, event program, etc.
