BUSO 5 Course Image
This course provides thorough training in the skills and techniques of English, as applied to business situations, with emphasis on effective paragraphs and memos.
(54 hours lecture;      Degree applicable)

Course Measurable Objectives:

  1. Analyze sentences in terms of part of speech and sentence structure.
  2. Apply correct punctuation to sentences.
  3. Identify the topic sentence in paragraphs.
  4. Recognize various developmental methods of paragraph writing.
  5. Develop business related ideas into unified, coherent paragraphs, using correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  6. Apply developmental methods, e.g. narration, description, comparison-contrast, persuasion, analogy in business related memos.

Course Level Student Learning Outcomes:


Students completing BUSO 5 - Business English will:
  1. be able to write effective business communications.
  2. have discovered new knowledge that relate to discipline, technical and human skills, enabling them to be productive members of the community.


BUSO 25 Course Image
This course teaches the student written communications including letters and memos meeting a variety of situations in the business environment.   Includes writing of good news, bad news, sales, claims, and persuasive correspondence; letters and resumes appropriate to job seeking and application; and practicing oral skills as applied to job interviews and business reports.
(54 hours lecture;      Degree appropriate, CSU)

Course Measurable Objectives:

  1. Evaluate business situations and produce appropriate, effective inter-office memorandums.
  2. Compose an appropriate, effective letter presenting good news, bad news, sales, or persuasive content.
  3. Apply communication theories and processes to the business environment.
  4. Use informative and sales letters to convey information and influence people favorably.
  5. Develop appropriate answers to frequently asked interview questions.
  6. Develop and deliver a 3-5 minute presentation on a business related topic.

Course Level Student Learning Outcomes:


Students completing BUSO 25 - Business Communications will:
  1. have discovered new knowledge that relate to discipline, technical and human skills, enabling them to be productive members of the community.
  2. have developed a genuine professional interest in topics related to the courses completed that will contribute toward motivation for life-long learning.
  3. have developed the ability to relate material from each course completed to their current and future professional needs, even if these needs fall into a different discipline.


BUSO 26 Course Image
This course is designed to help business people communicate more effectively in spoken communication situations such as training sessions, presentations, and professional discussions.
(54 hours lecture;      Degree applicable)
(May be taken for option of letter grade or Credit / No Credit.)

Course Measurable Objectives:

  1. Develop confidence and speaking skills.
  2. Apply skills in simulated business situations such as conferences and business groups.
  3. Analyze and apply persuasive oral techniques.
  4. Solve problems favorably for the speaker.
  5. Practice research in development of speeches.
  6. Develop presentation manuscripts, topical outlines, note cards, and visual aids.
  7. Evaluate presentation preparation and delivery.

Students completing BUSO 26 - Oral Communications for Business will:
  1. have discovered new knowledge that relate to discipline, technical and human skills, enabling them to be productive members of the community.
  2. have developed a genuine professional interest in topics related to the courses completed that will contribute toward motivation for life-long learning.
