OmniGlobeWe are pleased to invite you to join us for the grand opening of our newly constructed Astronomy Dome. This state of the art facility includes a Meade 16-inch tracking Cassegrain Reflector outfitted with an “S-BIG” CCD camera, housed in a 21-foot free-rotating Ash-Dome with a vertical separating shutter aperture.

The Dome is at the heart of Mt. SAC’s Science Exploration Center, featuring the Meek Natural History Animal Collection along with meteorite, fossil, mineral & gem collections, and the new OmniGlobe Earth and Space Projection System. A piece of cutting edge technology, the “OmniGlobe” provides unlimited educational possibilities including projections of Earth weather, climate change, plate tectonics, human impact, glaciations, the Sun, planets and major moons.

Astronaut Kathryn ThorntonHelping us open this amazing structure is Astronaut Kathryn Thornton . Dr. Thornton was selected by NASA in May 1984, became an astronaut in July 1985, and is a veteran of three space flights, having flown on STS-33 in 1989, STS-49 in 1992, and STS-61 in 1993. She logged over 975 hours in space, including more than 21 hours of extravehicular activity (EVA). Astronaut Thornton is currently a professor at the University of Virginia in the School of Engineering and Applied Science in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

We hope to see you on campus for this very special occasion!
