Education & Child Development Scholarship


The Child Development and Education (CD&E) Department provides scholarship applications for students majoring in Education and Child Development. Completed applications are reviewed and recipients selected in Spring 2017.

On Thursday, May 25, 2017, the CD&E Department will host a Recognition Ceremony. A variety of scholarships will be presented to honorees. Graduates earning an A.S. or AS-T Degree in Child Development or an A.S. in Educational Paraprofessional will also be recognized.

We aim to encourage and support the efforts of new, returning, and continuing students who have achieved excellence.

The DEADLINE TO SUBMIT A COMPLETED APPLICATION is MONDAY, APRIL 3, 2017, by 8 PM.

Completed applications can be placed in the Scholarship mail basket located in Building 73 on the reception desk.

Available Scholarships:

    • Roberta M. Berns Legacy Scholarship ($2000)

      This endowed scholarship is a tribute to Roberta M. Berns, who taught at Saddleback for 30 years. Roberta is author to the best-selling Child, Family, School, Community: Socialization and Support, now in its 10th Edition. The textbook has been adopted by thousands of colleges worldwide and examines how the school, family, and community influence children’s socialization. Ms. Berns founded and chaired the Human Development Department at Saddleback College and also served as a professor at the University of California, Irvine. Roberta’s husband, Dr. Michael Berns, is a renowned UC Irvine Microbiologist professor/researcher and co-founder of the Beckman Laser Institute. Michael and Roberta were high school sweethearts; both attended Cornell University and shared 56 years together before she passed away in spring 2015. One of their two children is Tammy Karn, a longtime faculty member in the Mt. SAC English Department.

      This scholarship is intended to inspire students with a passion for working with young children and their families and provide financial support to complete an AS or AS-T in Child Development. An applicant must have completed 15 semester units at Mt. SAC with an overall minimum GPA of 3.0. An applicant must be a Child Development major working toward completion of AS or AS-T in Child Development and demonstrate financial need to be eligible for this award.   Please submit a letter of recommendation from a Mt. SAC Professor (excluding full-time Child Development faculty) and current FAFSA application. Students applying for this scholarship must enroll in Child Development classes at Mt.     • Katie Gerecke Child Development Book Scholarship ($250)
      A student who demonstrates strong academic ability and achievement in their Child Development courses. This student has completed a minimum of 18 Child Development units, has substantial unmet financial need and demonstrates purposeful and meaningful commitment in service to children and families.     • Isabel Robertson Child Development Memorial Scholarship ($250)
      A student who has returned to college after an absence (a year or more) with a minimum of two core Child Development courses (6 units). This student shows academic motivation and persistence in the face of challenges. Download Application!
    • Child Development Achievement Scholarship ($300)
      A Child Development major who has completed a minimum of 28 units in Child Development with a GPA of 3.0 or higher while balancing family obligations plus college and/or community service to others. (Attach proof of Associate Teacher, Teacher, Master Teacher or Site Supervisor Permit from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing). Download Application!
    • TK -12 Career Incentive Scholarship ($300)
      An Education major who is pursuing a career in Transition Kindergarten -12 Education. This student has completed 15 units of the major and an overall GPA of 3.2 or higher. In addition to GPA, the student must have completed advanced courses including ED 10 and ED 16 show a commitment to learning, and intellectual curiosity. Download Application!
    • Child Development Transfer Scholarship ($400)
      A Child Development major who will transfer to a 4-year university in the fall of 2017 to and attain a BA/BS in Child Development. This student must have a minimum 3.2 GPA and completed 24 units of Child Development. Download Application!
