Mt. SAC Forensics Team Wins Back-to-Back National Titles
WALNUT, Calif.–––For the second straight year and the third time in the last four years, the Mt. San Antonio College Forensics Team won the Phi Rho Pi national speech title at the national tournament held April 7-12 at Casper and Northwest colleges in Denver.
Mt. SAC edged out rival Moorpark College for the community college title, while Matthew Schaupp (Pomona) won first place in parliamentary debate and Barrett Tate (West Covina) placed fifth for the Bovero-Tabor Award, which recognizes the best individual speakers. All together, Mt. SAC won seven gold medals, five silver medals, and nine bronze medals.
Gold medals winners for Mt. SAC were Tate in impromptu speaking and informative speaking, Conny Chege (Chino Hills) in interpretation, Joshua Hartwell (Upland) in informative speaking, Chege and Hartwell in duo interpretation, Christian Green (Claremont) in poetry interpretation, and Jasmine Paek (Hacienda Heights) in informative speaking.
Silver medals winners were Jendi Samai (Chino Hills) in communication analysis. Naseen Akramian (Upland) in impromptu speaking, Tate and Akramian in parliamentary debate, Schaupp and Chidi Agu (Chino Hills) in parliamentary debate, and Sowmya Murthy (Chino Hills) in persuasive speaking.
Bronze medal winners were Samai in prose interpretation and Lincoln-Douglas debate, Agu in speech to entertain, Schaupp in informative speaking, Murthy in communication analysis, Murthy and Hartwell in parliamentary debate, Jonathan Roach (Upland) in poetry interpretation and speech to entertain, and Matthew Covalt (Chino Hills) and Kristen Swafford (Walnut) in parliamentary debate.
This championship victory marks the ninth time Mt. SAC has won the Phi Rho Pi national title. Combined with four wins as the top community college at the four-year college national tournament, the championship marks the 13th time in the last 20 years that Mt. SAC has been recognized as the top community college in the nation.
