Mt. SAC Students Named to State Academic Teams
WALNUT, Calif.––– Mt. San Antonio College students Austin Cooper and Diana Blake are two of the 80 community college students throughout the state recently selected for the 2013 All-California Academic teams, chosen by Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the international community college honor society.
Cooper and Blake, both students in Mt. SAC's Honors Program, received medallions during the Community College League of California’s awards ceremony held on March 6 at the Sacramento Convention Center. Selection to the academic teams is based on grades, leadership, and community service.
Cooper, 20, is an economics major and carries a 3.76 GPA. He was selected for the All-California Academic First Team, the highest honor. A Walnut resident, he is a past-president of Mt. SAC’s PTK chapter. He also played football for the Mounties for a year. Off campus, he volunteers with Kaiser Permanente in Baldwin Park and has helped sponsor community health fairs. He plans to transfer to UC Berkeley or USC as a development studies major and eventually pursue a medical degree.
Blake, a 33-year-old mother of three, is an English major and carries a 3.8 GPA. She was selected for the All-California Academic Third Team. A Chino resident, she has helped coordinate the Breast Cancer Walks on campus. Off campus, she volunteers with her church in Hacienda Heights and with the Save Our Beach project in Seal Beach. She plans to transfer to Cal State Fullerton as an English major and eventually teach English.
The 26 first-team, 27 second-team, and 27 third-team winners represent some of the best of the 2.8 million students enrolled in California’s community college system.
