Mt. SAC Planetarium Presents Astronomy Programs in December

WALNUT, Calif.––– The Mt. San Antonio College Randall Planetarium presents a series of timely special programs on the stars and planets, including its classic holiday program and a program on Maya astronomy and civilization, in December.

"Stars of The Pharaohs," a program on the stars and astronomy of ancient Egypt, will be shown Saturday, Dec. 1, at 6 and 7:30 p.m. Travel to ancient Egypt and explore the stars and various astronomical phenomena during the time of the pharaohs. This program looks at how the ancient Egyptians used science to tell time, to formulate a workable calendar, and to align huge buildings.

"One World, One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure," a special program for preschoolers, will be presented on Wednesdays, Dec. 5 and 19, at 10 a.m. matinees. In this program, "Sesame Street’s" Big Bird, Elmo and their friend from China, Hu Hu Zhu, take viewers on a journey of discovery to learn about the Big Dipper, the North Star, the sun, and the moon.

"Season of Light," the Planetarium’s classic holiday program, will be shown on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 14 and 15, at 6 and 7:30 p.m. "Season of Light" explores the history of the holiday season and its connection with this astronomically significant time of year. The show examines the astronomical phenomenon of the Christmas Star and the beginnings of the holiday traditions, including decorating, feasting, and the exchanging of gifts.

"Tales of the Maya Skies," a program on Maya science and astronomy, will be shown on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 21 and 22, at 6 and 7:30 p.m. Take a journey back in time to the jungles of Mexico and hear the stories of the ancient Maya civilization, and how the planets and astronomical events influenced the Maya people.

The Planetarium will be closed Dec. 23 to Jan. 2 for the holiday break.
