Mt. SAC Student Selected for All-USA Academic Team
WALNUT, Calif.–––Mt. San Antonio College honor student Laurie Covarrubias was among 20 students from across the nation recently named to the 2012 All-USA Community College Academic Team by Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the international community college honor society. She was selected for the honor from a competitive pool of 1,700 students from over 800 colleges in 48 states, Guam, and Canada.“By encouraging me, the faculty and staff at Mt. SAC helped me realize my potential,” she said. “Winning this award validates my efforts and the efforts of all of those who have helped along the way.”
Covarrubias was recognized at the 54th annual PTK Presidents Breakfast during the annual convention of the American Association of Community Colleges April 22-23 in Orlando, FL. As an All-USA Academic Team selection, Covarrubias received a medal, a trophy, and a $2,500 scholarship. Selections are based on academics, leadership skills, and campus/community involvement.
Covarrubias, 29, is a biological anthropology major and carries a 3.95 GPA. Prior to the national honor, she was selected for the All-California Academic First Team earlier this spring. She was also honored as one of Mt. SAC’s Students of Distinction last year.
“She’s an amazing young woman, who balances her activities with her academics and sets an impressive example for other students to follow,” said Mt. SAC Honors Program Director Carolyn Kuykendall.
A resident of West Covina, Covarrubias serves as vice president of scholarship for Mt. SAC’s PTK chapter. On campus, she is a member of the Native American Intertribal Student Association (NAISA), is a presenter for the college’s Single Parent Academy, and volunteers for the Child Development Center. Driven by a passion for the plight of Native Americans, she heads a school supplies and personal products drive on campus to help supply the needs of Native American school children in South Dakota. She also serves as a volunteer off campus with the Lodge Circle Ministries.
She plans to transfer to Pomona Pitzer College as an anthropology major with an emphasis on forensic science and eventually wants to work in the field of forensic science in a crime lab.
