Mt. SAC Students Win 52 Awards at Journalism Convention
WALNUT, Calif.––Mt. San Antonio College journalism students won 52 awards at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) Southern California Convention, the most awards Mt. SAC students have ever won at the competition.“The students just keep raising the bar,” said Mt. SAC journalism professor and faculty adviser Toni Albertson. “We are placing in categories that we never have in the past, categories like enterprise news, broadcast news and Web-only categories. This shows how far this program has come and how far we can go.”
Of the 52 awards, 29 were first-, second-, third-, or fourth-place awards. The student newspaper, The Mountaineer, and the student publication Substance Magazine both took General Excellence, the highest award given to a publication at the convention.
Top editor recognitions were given to Evan Lancaster (Walnut), editor-in-chief of the student newspaper; Carmichael Cruz (Rowland Heights) and Alfredo Camacho (Pomona), co-editors-in-chief of Substance Magazine, and Isai Rocha (Baldwin Park), editor-in-chief of Mountiewire.com
First place awards went to Vanessa Solis (Alhambra) for Outstanding Copyediting; Aldo Padilla (Pomona) and Beatrice Alcala (Walnut) for Outstanding Magazine Cover Design; and Beatrice Alcala for Outstanding Magazine Design.
Second place awards went to Shadi Jurdi (Chino) for Outstanding Magazine Opinion Writing; Michelle Liptak (West Covina) for Outstanding Sports Action Photo; Beatrice Alcala, James Choy (Walnut) , Michelle Liptak and Isai Rocha for Outstanding Photo Essay; Beatrice Alcala for Outstanding Magazine Line Illustration, and Joe Calatrello (Covina) for Outstanding Feature Photo.
Third place awards were given to Wendy Rubick (Ontario) for Outstanding News Writing; Evan Lancaster (Walnut), Wendy Rubick and Ray Mendoza (Walnut) for Outstanding Enterprise News Story Writing; Evan Lancaster and Frank Cardenas (Whittier) for Outstanding Column Writing; Henry Montemayor (Walnut) for Outstanding Sports Writing; Carmichael Cruz (Rowland Heights) for Outstanding Broadcast News Writing; Aldo Padilla (Pomona), Shadi Jurdi and Beatrice Alcala for Outstanding Magazine Photo Essay; and Beatrice Alcala for Outstanding Magazine Line Illustration.
Fourth Place awards went to Isai Rocha for Outstanding Sports Writing; Justine Mrsich (Pomona) for Outstanding Copyediting; Araceli Salinas (Pomona) for Outstanding Magazine Photo; Joe Calatrello (Covina) for Outstanding Feature Photo; and Adam Valenzuela (Ontario) for Outstanding Editorial Cartoon.
Honorable Mentions went to Ray Peregrina (Whittier) for Profile Feature Writing; Frank Cardenas for Opinion Writing; Magali Amezquita (San Bernardino), Tawny de la Pena (Walnut) and Wendy Rubick for Broadcast News Package; Wendy Rubick for News Feature Writing; Jessica Cardenas (Upland) for Feature Profile Writing; Vanessa Solis for Feature Writing; Adam Valenzuela and Beatrice Alcala for Newspaper Line Illustration; Adam Valenzuela for Editorial Cartoon; Beatrice Alcala for Student Designed Advertisement; Isai Rocha for Sports Action Photo; Vanessa Gonzalez (Rowland Heights) and Aldo Padilla for Feature Photo; Aldo Padilla for Student Designed Web Advertisement.
Aldo Padilla, Vanessa Gonzalez and Joe Calatrello won special awards in the Photo Slideshow Competition.
The journalism students will move on to the 2010 JACC State Convention, scheduled in April at the Wilshire Grand Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, where they will compete against journalism students from throughout California.
