Mt. SAC Offers Child Care Food Program

WALNUT, Calif.—For the 11th consecutive year, the Child Development Center at Mt. San Antonio College is offering a free and reduced-cost Child Care Food Program to all children who attend the center.

Through this federally funded program, the center serves nutritious breakfasts, lunches, and snacks to approximately 200 children from birth to age 5.

Income eligibility guidelines require a family of four to earn $35,798 or less annually to qualify for the program. Complete eligibility guidelines are available from the center.

Mt. SAC Offers Day and Evening German Courses

WALNUT, Calif.—The Mt. San Antonio College Foreign Languages Department will offer day and evening German classes during the Fall Semester, which begins Aug. 15.

Learn German conversation, reading, and writing for travel, business, and fun. German I will be offered both days and evenings while German II and III will be offered only during the evenings. Earn college credit while you learn the language that is the native tongue for more than 100 million people in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

Registration for Mt. SAC's Fall Semester Begins July 13

WALNUT, Calif.—New, continuing, and returning students can register for Mt. San Antonio College's 2005 Fall Semester credit classes by telephone or online beginning July 13 through Aug. 10.

To register by touch-tone telephone, students may call (909) 595-6722 to add classes, drop classes, and make scheduling changes. The service is available from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Students must check their permit for their assigned registration date and time. They will not be allowed to register before their assigned time.

Continuing students who prefer to register online may do so at my.mtsac.edu. A student ID number and PIN are required.

New students need to submit an enrollment application to the college's Admissions and Records Office, located on the lower level of the campus Student Services Building (9B). The Admissions Office is open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. New students must also contact the Counseling Office to sign up for an orientation session before registering for classes.

Mt. SAC’s Fall Semester begins Aug. 15.

Student Wins Bronze at SkillsUSA Nationals

WALNUT, Calif.—Mt. San Antonio College electronics student Scott Moore (San Dimas) won the bronze medal in the electronics technology competition at the SkillsUSA nationals held recently in Kansas City, MO.

Mt. SAC sent four vocational education students to the competition, who advanced to the nationals by winning gold medals at the state SkillsUSA competition in April. Other competitors for Mt. SAC included Brad Williams (Chino Hills), who placed fourth in the technical drafting competition, Jennifer Craig (Baldwin Park), who placed ninth in the customer service category, and Justin Santana (Rancho Cucamonga) who placed 12th in the computer maintenance competition.

SkillsUSA (formerly the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America-VICA) is a nationally affiliated vocational club representing secondary and post-secondary students in the trade, technical, and health education fields. The vocational education organization represents more than a quarter-million students in over 13,000 chapters nationwide.

Students Win Medals at Health Careers Nationals

WALNUT, Calif.—Mt. San Antonio College health career students won a gold medal and five bronze medals at the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) national competition held recently in Nashville. More than 5,000 secondary and post-secondary students competed at the national tournament.

Mt. SAC’s Colleen Shields (Los Angeles) won the gold medal in the extemporaneous writing competition, while Defina Osby (Inglewood) won a bronze medal in extemporaneous speaking. In the creative problem solving competition, Sarah Collett (Long Beach), Saharith Lopez (Baldwin Park), Randy Luttrell (Ontario) and Jacqueline Noone (Highland) won bronze medals.

Other competitors for Mt. SAC included Elizabeth Lopez (Baldwin Park), who placed fourth in nursing assisting, Carlos Villarreal (Whittier), who placed fifth in extemporaneous writing, Patricia Bush (Rialto), placed sixth in prepared speaking, and Supaphan Wiget (Ontario), Brandell Garcia (Fullerton) and Jaime Fosmo (Phelan), who placed ninth in creative problem solving.

Established in 1976 by the U.S. Department of Education, HOSA is the national organization for secondary and post-secondary health career students. The organization provides students in 40 states with skills, leadership development, and career development.
