ALTERNATE MEDIA TECHNICIAN
Disabled Student Programs & Services
Student Services Division
50% time through June 30, 2013 with possible extension
Schedule: 20 hours per week between the hours of 8:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M., Monday – Friday

Open until filled.

Hourly Rate: 18.21 per hour.

OVERVIEW: Under the direction of the Director of Disabled Student Programs & Services, perform a variety of technical support duties involved in the development and maintenance of alternate media for students with disabilities; assist with the application of a variety of alternate media technologies related to specific disabilities; serve as a resource to staff related to alternative media computer technology operation, formatting and repair.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
• Perform a variety of support duties involved in the development of alternate media for students with disabilities; research and produce alternate media in a designated format
• Prepare a variety of alternative media and instructional materials; produce printed material in alternate formats, including converting printed material into Braille, e-text, DAISY, Kurzweil, MP3, PDF, enlargements and other related formats; troubleshoot as necessary
• Maintain and secure storage of large inventory of specialized hardware, software and curricular reading materials
• Maintain adapted computer workstations and related applications; install software and hardware components and specialized equipment, such as optical scanning equipment, voice-activated programs and visual aids; maintain current knowledge of alternate media hardware and software
• Serve as a resource to staff related to alternate media computer technology operation, repair and formatting; provide technical support to staff
• Maintain accurate inventory of supplies, materials and equipment; request and receive instructional materials for assignments
• Assist manager in the organization, preparation and presentation of instructional materials in alternate formats; assist others in accessing converted material
• Operate a computer and other assigned office and instructional equipment; maintain computer files and software according to established procedures
• Maintain accurate records related to the production of media, permission received from the appropriate source and priority of media produced; update and maintain progress records of various assignments
• Provide orientations for students and staff on using specific programs as assigned
• Respond to questions concerning assigned subject matter, equipment usage and other related concerns and issues
• Perform related duties as assigned


Alternate Media Technician

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:
• Methods and procedures of operating computers and peripheral equipment related to alternate media for students with disabilities
• Various alternate media and computer software applications, including Kurzweil, ABBYY FineReader, Acrobat Professional, Braille embossers, conversion software and other related applications desired
• Basic reference materials and effective research techniques
• Basic principles of computer technology
• Technical aspects of field of specialty
• Record-keeping techniques
• Modern office practices, procedures and equipment
• Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies
• Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy
• Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary

Ability to:
• Perform a variety of technical support duties involved in the maintenance and simple repair of alternate media equipment for students with disabilities
• Perform a variety of clerical duties to assist in the implementation of programs and services
• Type and input data at 35 words per minute
• Proofread for accuracy and make corrections
• Set up, design, troubleshoot and operate assigned departmental equipment
• Read, understand, interpret and apply department rules, policies and materials relating to assigned field
• Provide assistance and information to staff on the availability and uses of instructional materials and equipment
• Operate a computer and a variety of office and instructional equipment
• Determine appropriate action within clearly defined guidelines
• Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others
• Plan, organize and prioritize work
• Meet schedules, time lines and deadlines
• Work independently with little direction

Education and Experience: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and two years related experience.

A 35 Net WPM Typing Certificate (5-minute timed test) is required and must be issued within one year of time of application from an accredited school or agency, excluding on-line agencies. The typing certificate must be attached to each application at time of submission. It is highly recommended that resumes and letter(s) of recommendation or other pertinent information be included with the application.
