100% time, 12 month term
Current hours: Friday - Tuesday, 2:30 PM – 11:00 PM

SALARY: Range A-88, Steps 1 - 6, $4,333 - $5,531 per month includes 6% shift differential

OVERVIEW: Under the direction of an assigned manager, patrol the College campus, including buildings, grounds and other college property to maintain a safe environment for students, staff and faculty; enforce College rules and regulations including the State Vehicle Code and Penal Code laws and regulations; secure buildings on the college campus property; provide escort services, information and assistance to students, staff, faculty and campus visitors.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
• Patrol the College campus, including buildings, grounds and other college property to maintain a safe environment for students, staff and faculty; investigate violations and crimes; issue citations, and eject persons from campus as necessary; drive a vehicle to conduct work
• Enforce College rules and regulations, including the State Vehicle Code and Penal Code laws and regulations; serve as liaison to a wide variety of local and federal authorities, including County Fire Department, FBI, DEA, County Sheriff departments, District Attorney’s Office and others
• Assist and respond to various medical emergencies according to established procedures; perform CPR/First Aid and operate an Automatic External Defibrillator as necessary; respond to emergency medical situations including illnesses, shock, seizures and bleeding; summon appropriate medical personnel
• Respond to a variety of emergencies involving thorough investigations, such as medical emergencies, traffic accidents, terrorist threats bomb threats workplace violence, domestic violence, crime situations, including stalking, felony assault and gang incidents and other various incidents
• Respond to calls involving industrial accidents; assist local sworn officers in arresting suspects as necessary
• Conduct thorough investigations and evaluate various incidents; photograph pertinent aspects of incidents as necessary; obtain related information to address the issue of Risk Management and District liability; prepare incident reports as necessary and submit to appropriate personnel
• Serve as liaison during disasters such as fires and earthquakes; respond to hazardous materials spills and emergencies and take appropriate action
• Operate various campus systems, including water valves, electric switches and related systems during emergency situations; investigate unusual conditions and take immediate action to reduce danger and possible malfunction of equipment; notify appropriate agencies regarding impaired equipment
• Verify credentials of persons on campus and prevent entry where appropriate; escort visitors from campus and other restricted areas; secure buildings, lock doors and gates
• Provide information and respond to inquiries from students, staff and visitors; provide directions to campus locations and information related to College programs and services
• Maintain current knowledge of technical advances in the field of campus security; recommend changes to processes and equipment as appropriate
• Perform related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
• Basic State Vehicle Code, Penal Code, search and seizure, and organizational regulations
• Methods, procedures and practices of effective campus security
• State and federal training and reporting guidelines
• First aid and CPR procedures
• Hazardous materials and related abatement methods
• Procedures of emergency response and evacuation
• Principles and procedures of record keeping and report preparation
• Oral and written communication skills
• Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy

Ability to:
• Operate a patrol vehicle and patrol equipment in a safe and effective manner
• Conduct an investigation and interview concerning crime, traffic and related incidents
• Encourage adherence to safety standards
• Perform basic first aid and CPR procedures, including the operation of an Automatic External Defibrillator
• Shoot, process and print photographs
• Interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures
• Prepare reports and other information related to observed violations
• Work confidentially with discretion
• Understand scope of authority in making independent decisions
• Maintain records and prepare report
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work


Education and Experience: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and two years security, law enforcement or related experience.


Licenses and Other Requirements:
• Any provisional offer of employment is dependent upon the candidate's successful completion of their fingerprint clearance prior to the start of employment. Additionally, the cost of the fingerprint clearance will be borne by the candidate.
• Valid California driver's license
• Employment of selected candidate contingent on passing physical examination
• Certificate of Completion – College Security Officer Training Course within the probationary period
• Possession of appropriate CPR and First Aid certificates issued by an authorized agency within the probationary period
• Incumbents in this class are required to attend an Automatic External Defibrillator course within the probationary period
• Complete and pass a State Certified Course in the use of Pepper Spray at College expense; Once successfully passing the course Public Safety Officer shall be required to carry a canister of Pepper Spray, while on-duty and after signing for the District’s use of Force Policy
• Complete and pass a State Certified Course in the use of a tactical telescoping baton at College expense; Once successfully passing the course Public Safety Officer shall be required to carry a tactical telescoping baton, while on-duty and after signing for the District’s use of Force Policy
Preferred:
• College courses in Administration of Justice

EXAMINATION REQUIRED: A review of applicants’ experience and qualifications will be conducted. Based on that evaluation, only applicants that provided all required documents and met the minimum qualifications will be qualified to participate in the next step of the examination process. An Examination Notification will be emailed inviting qualified applicants to attend the Public Safety Officer examination scheduled on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at 1:30 PM, in Building 28A, Room 103. Applicants who do not receive the Examination Notification email will not be allowed to participate in the examination process. During the exam, mobile phones must be turned off; calculators OK. You must present photo ID. Please park in parking lot F. Do not park in metered or handicapped spaces.
