REFUSE & RECYCLABLE COLLECTOR
Grounds Department
100% Time, 12 month term
Current hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 4:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

SALARY: Range B-46, Steps 1 - 6, $3,354 - $4,270 includes 3% shift differential. Initial salary placement is Step 1

OVERVIEW: Under the direction of the Director - Grounds, operate a motorized, hydraulic-dump cart, forklift and skip loader to pick up, transport and dispose of solid waste and recyclables; load and unload bins, bags and other containers and materials.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
• Operate a motorized, hydraulic-dump cart to pick up, transport and dispose of solid waste and recyclables along designated routes; observe legal and defensive driving practices

• Place liners in cans and reposition cans as designated according to route guidelines; pick up paper and other debris from around containers and trash bins; assure areas are clean of debris

• Collect and break down cardboard; operate forklift to load waste, recyclable containers and other functions as required; load and unload bins, bags and other containers and materials by hand as necessary

• Conduct required daily inspections of equipment; check and maintain fluid levels; service equipment with fuel, oil, water and other fluids; perform minor maintenance and repairs as needed; refer major repair needs to appropriate personnel

• Ensure daily disposal of waste into dumpster; operate skip loaders to load bins with waste

• Maintain carts in a clean and safe operating condition; wash, sweep and clean trucks utilizing hoses, steam cleaners, shovels and brooms; conduct safety inspections of the vehicle to assure proper maintenance and safe handling of the cart

• Utilize two-way radio for truck to truck and truck to base communication; communicate with campus personnel and others to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns

• Maintain routine records related to daily routes, inspections and assigned activities

• Perform a variety of duties related to the Grounds Department general duties such as special event preparation, landscape maintenance and athletic field preparation as directed

• Perform a variety of custodial duties incidental to grounds keeping, including cleaning parking lots, walks and driveways

• Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment, including safety glasses, latex and other protective gloves as required

• Perform related duties as assigned


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Knowledge of:

• Health and safety regulations and procedures
• Basic record-keeping techniques
• Oral and written communication skills
• Proper lifting techniques
• Defensive driving techniques and rules of the road

Ability to:

• Pick up, transport and dispose of solid waste and recyclables on designated routes throughout the Campus
• Load and unload cart, bins, trashcans, bags and other containers and materials
• Operate solid waste carts, skip loaders, forklifts and other utility vehicles
• Learn methods, procedures, equipment and designated routes used in solid waste and recyclable material pick-up, transportation and disposal
• Understand and follow written and oral instructions
• Observe health and safety regulations
• Observe legal and defensive driving practices
• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
• Maintain routine records related to work performed
• Perform heavy physical labor

Education and Experience: Any combination equivalent to: six months related experience


EXAMINATION REQUIRED OF ALL APPLICANTS: In order to be considered for this position, all applicants must be present for a general examination on Tuesday, November 24, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. in Bldg 28A, Rm 103. Mobile phones must be turned off. Must present photo ID. Please park in Lot F. Do not park in metered or handicapped spaces. This is the only notice that you will receive.


Licenses and Other Requirements:

• Valid California Class C driver’s license
• Possess or be able to pass the certification for forklift operation (Lift-Truck Operation) within the probationary period
• Employment of selected candidate contingent on passing physical examination
• Recommended candidate for this position will be required to obtain fingerprint clearance prior to beginning employment
• Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling heavy objects weighing 50 lbs or more
