Crossing the “Bridge” to success!
For Justino Rojas, being the first in his family to start college was kind of scary. He didn’t know anybody at Mt. SAC. He didn’t know the campus. And he had his doubts about succeeding. But he enrolled in Mt. SAC’s Summer Bridge Program, a six-week session designed to help entering freshmen make a smooth transition from high school to college.
There he honed his math and English skills, learned how to navigate the campus, and was able to start the fall semester with a new set of friends who shared goals and dreams.
“College was the reality check that I needed to move forward,” says Justino, whose parents moved the family here from Mexico to pursue a better life. “The Bridge Program helped remove the fear factor and gave me the confidence I needed to succeed in college and in life.”
Justino finished Mt. SAC and transferred to Cal Poly Pomona to earn an engineering degree. Today he is a successful mechanical engineer at Sempra Utilities and is now enjoying the life his parents had always wished for him. But Justino won’t be the only Rojas to finish college. His brother, Paulo, is following in his footsteps studying electrical engineering at Cal Poly.
