2013 Alumnus of the Year Award

Alumnus of the Year Guidelines
For many years Mt. SAC has announced an “alumnus of the year” award (or more than one) to a deserving alumnus at commencement. The purpose of this document is to provide guidance and structure to the Alumnus/a of the Year selection process final decision. While many people may be nominated, there shall be only one Alumnus of the Year. That person will be acknowledged each year at commencement.
Definition of Alumni. The consensus from existing Mt. SAC alumni materials defines an “alum” as anyone who has taken a class at Mt. SAC, regardless of whether or not the individual finished a certificate or degree program.
Criteria. The nominee should have demonstrated the following characteristics and accomplishments.
• Achieved formal or informal recognition by peers or the public for life accomplishments
• Participated in life events that reflect the values, diversity and integrity of Mt. SAC
• Known regionally and/or nationally for their achievements
• Contributed to making the world a better place
• Willing to be a contributing and lasting part of the Mt. SAC Alumni Association.
Nominating Process. Each February/March, the Executive Director of the Mt. SAC Foundation and/or the Alumni Association staff at the Foundation will issue a call for Alumnus/a of the Year nominations. A simple nomination form reflecting the above criteria shall be used. Any Mt. SAC employee, former employee, student or alumni may nominate an individual for Alumnus of the Year. Nominations are to be submitted directly to the Foundation office by April 19.
A screening committee appointed by the Foundation Board (3) faculty shall review the nomination applications in March/April. Every attempt will be made to include former Alumnus of the Year winners in the application screening process.
Final Selection Process. The nominating committee will forward three (3) finalists for Alumnus of the Year to the President’s office by April 19 each year. The President shall review the finalists with President’s Cabinet. The President in collaboration with the Executive Director of the Foundation and the President of the Alumni Association shall make the final selection. Should an active Alumni Association President not be available, the prior Alumnus of the Year recipient may serve on the final selection process committee.
