Committee Briefs

November 5, 2009

Prior to the meeting, interested committee members had the opportunity to tour the Math/Science Complex and the Exploratorium.
Vice President Gregoryk provided a brief summary of where we are related to issuance of Measure RR bonds. He reported that because the district’s assessed valuation has dropped 2.1%, the College is not able to sell bonds at this time. Committee members were reminded that the College promised voters that we would keep their costs of both Measure R and Measure RR to $25 per $100,000 of assessed valuation. Because construction costs are currently low, the College is very interested in moving forward with projects. Mr. Gregoryk said the College is pursuing a 3-5 year financial bridge loan in order to continue construction on campus and take advantage of low bids. Bids received for new projects were all below projections.
Gary Nellesen, Director of Facilities and Planning, provided an update of several projects on campus and a more detailed financial report of three projects that have had activity since the Committee’s last meeting. The Committee reaffirmed that all projects remain within the scope and objective of Measure R.
Appointment to the Citizens Oversight Committee is for a two-year term, and most appointments expire this December. Those who have served two consecutive two-year appointments, and thus not eligible for reappointment are: Sylvia Ann Mendoza, Drexel L. Smith, Jim Grivich, and Yesenia Leon. President Nixon thanked all committee members, but especially those leaving the committee, for their service over the years. Committee members not eligible for reappointment, and those choosing not to be reappointed, will be invited to the January 2010 Board of Trustees meeting for recognition and thanks for their service to the College. Both Drexel Smith and Sylvia Ann Mendoza shared their thoughts on having served on the Committee for four years. Both said that while it has been an honor and a pleasure to serve on the Committee, they stressed the importance of the work of the Committee and encouraged Committee members to do their due diligence.
